India Surpasses Renewable Energy Targets with Major Capacity Additions
India has significantly advanced its renewable energy goals by achieving 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources, five years ahead of its target according to the Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement. As of October 2025, India added 31.2 GW of non-fossil capacity in the fiscal year 2025-26, reaching a total installed capacity of about 259 GW. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy's Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies have awarded 67.5 GW of renewable energy capacity since April 2023, without any cancellations. The initiatives include a shift from plain solar power tenders to those involving solar-plus-storage configurations to address peak demand hours and improve transmission systems. Concurrently, the Central Electricity Authority and government actions are facilitating further advancements in energy storage systems and power purchase agreements, optimizing the integration of renewable energy into the grid.
