India Targets 874 GW Power Capacity by 2031 to Meet Demand

The Government of India has announced a strategic plan to increase the country's power generation capacity to 874 GW by 2031-32, aiming to meet the rising peak power demand. This capacity expansion will include significant contributions from both conventional (thermal) and renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. The initiative includes extensive transmission planning to ensure a synchronized development with power generation projects. Additionally, the plan supports renewable energy generation through various policies and incentives, including the waiving of inter-state transmission charges for solar and wind projects and the promotion of green hydrogen and offshore wind projects. The government has also scheduled the development of new infrastructure to support these advancements and plans to leverage foreign direct investment to facilitate growth.
