India to Increase Thermal Power Capacity to Meet Future Demand

India's Ministry of Power has projected a significant increase in the country's thermal power capacity based on a study by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The ministry aims to raise the installed capacity of thermal (coal and lignite) power plants to approximately 3,07,000 MW by 2034-35, from the current capacity of 2,11,855 MW as of March 2023. This entails the addition of at least 97,000 MW of new thermal capacity. Several plants are under construction or being planned, with a significant portion already commissioned since 2023. Factors such as the plant's location, technology, and operational characteristics influence the cost and efficiency of electricity production. The differences between coal-based and renewable energy tariffs highlight the distinct system requirements and cost components of each energy source.
