India Unveils Ambitious National Geospatial Mission with Enhanced Data Resolution
The Ministry of Science & Technology has announced the National Geospatial Mission as part of the Union Budget 2025-26. The mission aims to revolutionize geospatial infrastructure by offering Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with advanced resolutions of 25 cm for urban and plain areas and 1-3 m for hilly regions. With an initial investment of ₹100 crore, the mission will modernize land records, improve urban planning, and support infrastructure projects through PM Gati Shakti. Key components include geodetic reference modernization, data and mapping infrastructure enhancement, and Geo-ICT infrastructure establishment. The policy will also introduce a Unified Geospatial Interface for easier data access and processing. The National Institute of Geospatial Science & Technology (NIGST) will spearhead workforce training and capacity building in the geospatial domain.
