Indian Railways has reported a dramatic reduction in train accidents, with consequential train accidents dropping from 1,711 (2004-14) to just 31 in 2024-25 and projected to be 3 in 2025-26. The accidents per million train kilometers have decreased by 73%, from 0.11 in 2014-15 to 0.03 in 2024-25. Safety measures include a significant increase in fog safety devices and ultrasonic flaw detection testing, alongside enhanced maintenance practices and infrastructure improvements.
