Indian Railways Advances in Renewable Energy and Infrastructure
Indian Railways, as part of its goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, has significantly accelerated its renewable energy projects. By November 2025, the railway network had commissioned 812 MW of solar and 93 MW of wind power for its traction needs. Moreover, 1,600 MW of round-the-clock hybrid power has been secured. With 99.2% of the broad gauge network electrified, the railways have shown a substantial increase in electrification from 21,801 km before 2014 to 46,900 km by 2025. Additionally, state-of-the-art locomotives using IGBT technology are now in service, which are more energy-efficient with regenerative braking features. The introduction of hydrogen-powered trains is also underway as a pilot project, demonstrating Indian Railways' commitment to alternative energy solutions.
