Indian Railways Aims to Maintain Affordable Travel Amid Expanding Network

Indian Railways has committed to maintaining affordable travel with unchanged freight rates despite rising costs and a minimal fare increase for passengers after five years. A substantial ₹60,000 crore subsidy is being extended to keep passenger fares low, especially for distances up to 500 km and monthly season tickets. The ministry has ramped up infrastructure projects, including the near completion of dedicated freight corridors and significant electrification efforts, making Indian Railways the second-largest freight carrier globally by transporting 1,617 million tonnes of freight in 2024-25.
