Indian Railways Enhance Facilities for Disabled and Elderly Passengers
The Ministry of Railways has improved accessibility at 5,868 stations across India by providing wheelchairs and 196 battery-operated vehicles at 79 major stations to assist disabled individuals (Divyangjan), senior citizens, sick passengers, and pregnant women. Railways now offer concessional online ticket booking for Divyangjan and patients with certain illnesses, allowing one escort the same concession. Additional initiatives include lowering-berth allotment for seniors, earmarked quotas for Divyangjan, and setting up reservation counters dedicated to specific groups. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to enhance passenger facilities, with the Minister for Railways detailing these improvements in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
