India's Advancement in Small Modular Reactor Technology

The Department of Atomic Energy in India is focusing on the research and development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) under the Nuclear Energy Mission to provide clean and low-carbon energy. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has initiated projects to establish SMRs that can be used as captive power plants, replace retiring fossil fuel plants, and serve remote locations. Key projects include the 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor and the 55 MWe Small Modular Reactor, both planned for Tarapur, Maharashtra. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board ensures safety compliance while adapting to bespoke regulatory needs for SMRs.
