India's Battery Waste Management Boosted by New Regulations

The Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has implemented the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. These regulations promote environmentally sound management of waste batteries, covering electric vehicles, portable, automotive, and industrial batteries. Emphasizing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), producers must collect and recycle or refurbish waste batteries with set annual targets. By 2027-28, a considerable percentage of domestically recycled materials must be utilized in new batteries. A centralized online EPR portal facilitates registration and exchange of certificates. Since the rules' enactment, 58.26 lakh tonnes of battery waste have been recycled. The initiative aims to formalize the informal sector, boost recycling infrastructure, and enhance critical mineral supplies through advanced processes. Collaborative efforts with CSIR laboratories further support technology transfer. This framework aligns with government initiatives like the PLI-ACC and Critical Mineral Recycling Incentive Scheme to strengthen battery recycling and manufacturing capabilities in India.
