India's Consumer Protection Act 2019: Enhancements and Impact

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution in India is actively working on consumer protection and empowerment through the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. This new legislation replaces the 1986 Act and introduces significant features such as the establishment of a Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), simplified adjudication processes, online complaint filing, and provisions for product liability. The Act aims to provide a three-tier quasi-judicial system for consumer dispute resolution, ensuring speedy justice and enhanced transparency through the e-Jagriti portal, which integrates various consumer grievance redressal applications.
