India's Defence Self-Reliance Achieves New Milestones in 2025

In a significant announcement, Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, highlighted India's remarkable progress towards self-reliance in defence, known as "Atmanirbharta." Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India has shifted from a major importer to a global manufacturer and exporter of advanced defence systems. The country's defence production reached a historic high of ₹1.54 lakh crore in FY 2024–25, with exports soaring to ₹23,622 crore. This transformation is part of a broader vision under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, emphasizing indigenous capability. Additional initiatives include the establishment of Defence Industrial Corridors, the simplification of procurement processes, and the fostering of defence innovation involving startups and MSMEs, supported by the newly restructured Ordnance Factory Board. India is set to become a major global defence manufacturing hub by 2029, reinforcing its strategic autonomy and enhancing its armed forces' operational capabilities.
