India's Expanding Social Protection Network
India has made significant strides in expanding its social protection coverage, increasing from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% by 2025, according to the International Labour Organization. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has implemented various schemes such as the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, Employees’ Pension Scheme, and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme to secure retirement savings, pensions, and insurance benefits for organized sector workers. Special initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan scheme and the e-Shram portal target unorganized workers, including gig and platform workers, improving access to social security coverage. Recently, the Code on Social Security, 2020 has extended these benefits further to include gig and platform workers.
