India's First Cooperative-Led Ride-Hailing Platform Launched
The Ministry of Cooperation in India has introduced "Bharat Taxi," the country's first cooperative-led ride-hailing platform, aimed at transforming the mobility sector by emphasizing driver ownership and governance. Established by eight national-level cooperative institutions under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission model and reinvests all profits into drivers' welfare. The service is currently operational in several regions, including Delhi NCR and various cities in Gujarat, with nationwide expansion plans by 2029. The platform is committed to social security for drivers, or Sarathis, offering health and accident insurance, retirement savings, and enabling flexible work conditions across various platforms. Bharat Taxi also promotes gender inclusivity through initiatives like "Bike Didi," aiming for a cooperative-driven mobility ecosystem.
