India's Food Security Mission: Ensuring Nutritional Equity for 81 Crore Citizens
The Indian government has launched various initiatives to ensure food security and nutritional equity for its citizens, particularly through the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and the National Food Security Act (NFSA). These programs aim to increase food production, provide subsidized food grains to vulnerable populations, and enhance nutritional standards. The NFSA guarantees food access to 75% of the rural and 50% of the urban population, while initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) and rice fortification are designed to improve food quality and accessibility. The government is also implementing technology-driven reforms to enhance the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS).
