India's Healthcare Sector Sees Drastic Increase in Medical Education Seats

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India reports a significant expansion in medical education and healthcare infrastructure. Since 2014, the number of medical colleges has more than doubled from 387 to 818. Undergraduate medical seats have increased from 51,348 to 128,875, while postgraduate seats have grown from 31,185 to 82,059. There are currently 13,86,150 registered allopathic doctors, alongside 7,51,768 practitioners in AYUSH medicine, culminating in an estimated doctor-population ratio of 1:811—surpassing the WHO's recommended 1:1000. Additionally, 42.94 lakh nurses are registered, with institutions producing nearly 387,000 nurses annually. To meet health demands, the Indian Public Health Standards recommend 1 bed per 1000 people, with specific guidelines for various healthcare facility capacities.
