India's Jal Jeevan Mission Aims for Universal Tap Water Coverage by 2027

Since August 2019, the Indian Government, in partnership with state governments, has been implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure that every rural household has access to potable water through tap connections. As of March 2026, 15.82 crore rural households out of the targeted 19.36 crore now have access to tap water. The mission is investing heavily in infrastructure and sustainability measures to achieve universal coverage by 2027. Funding and efforts also extend to urban areas through the AMRUT programs, reinforcing water security and management across India.
