India's Massive Effort in Dam Rehabilitation and Safety

India ranks third in the world for the number of large dams, with over 6,628 specified dams, of which a significant portion are over 50 years old. The Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) seeks to enhance dam safety and performance through phased structural upgrades and technology integration. The comprehensive approach, supported by the Dam Safety Act, 2021, includes surveillance, inspection, and institutional reforms. Phase I (2012-2021) has shown significant progress across several Indian states, while Phases II and III continue to address broader safety and operational challenges.
