India's Nuclear Energy Mission: Development of Small Modular Reactors
The Indian government has launched a Nuclear Energy Mission with a budget of ₹20,000 crore for the research and development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is developing several types of SMRs, including the Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMR-200) for repurposing retiring thermal power plants, SMR-55 for off-grid energy supply, and a High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor for hydrogen generation. Plans are in place to establish these reactors at BARC's new campus in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, with construction approvals already obtained.
