India's Nuclear Power Capacity: Current Status and Future Plans
The Government of India currently operates 24 nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 8,780 MW. While there are no immediate plans to expand nuclear energy capacity to replace thermal power, a Sub-Committee is investigating the potential of converting retired thermal plant sites into nuclear plant locations. The country aims to meet future electricity demands with a diversified mix of energy sources, including significant contributions from renewable energy and nuclear power by 2034-35.
