India's Push for Self-Reliance in Edible Oils Through NMEO
The National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) is India's strategic initiative to bolster its edible oil self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on imports. With a focus on the expansion of oil palm plantations and enhancing oilseed productivity, the mission aims to achieve Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in edible oil production. By 2025-26, NMEO targets to cover 6.5 lakh hectares with oil palm, raising crude palm oil production significantly by 2029-30. For traditional oilseeds, NMEO-OS plans to increase production to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31, supporting economic growth and food security.
