India's Revised Coastline: New Measurements Reveal Significant Changes
India's coastline has been re-assessed, extending its length from 7,516.6 km to 11,098.81 km as per a joint survey by the National Hydrographic Office and the Survey of India. This was achieved using modern GIS technology and high-resolution High-Water Line data, capturing more detailed geographic features. The revision, accepted by the Coastal Protection and Development Advisory Committee, aids in improved developmental planning and disaster management. However, it does not alter the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) boundaries, which are based on High Tide Line mappings by the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management.
