India's Semicon India Programme Seeks to Boost Semiconductor Ecosystem and Talent Development

The Indian government, under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, launched the 'Semicon India Programme' to build a comprehensive semiconductor industry ecosystem. This initiative aims to support various stages of chip production, including design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging. As part of this strategy, 10 semiconductor units have secured approval with an investment of Rs 1.6 Lakh Cr. Furthermore, the government has introduced Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for electronics and IT hardware, driving substantial investment growth. To foster local talent, the government has rolled out initiatives like the Chips to Start-up Programme and developed courses in chip design and related fields. These combined efforts have exponentially increased India's electronics manufacturing and exports, positioning electronics as the third largest export category. Additionally, new frameworks such as the Design Linked Incentive Scheme and robust infrastructure support are empowering innovation in areas like AI devices, IoT, and telecommunication. The wide-ranging approach signals a pivotal move towards self-reliance and global competitiveness in the semiconductor sector.
