India's Strategy to Manage Tiger-Human Conflict and Augment Prey Base

The Indian government, through the National Tiger Conservation Authority, has published the status of ungulates in tiger habitats based on the 5th Cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation, 2022, showing that tiger prey species are increasing or stable. The Project Tiger Component supports habitat management and prey augmentation under a statutory conservation plan. To address tiger-human conflicts, the government has adopted a three-pronged strategy: providing material and logistical support to tiger reserves, restricting habitat interventions based on carrying capacity, and issuing standard operating procedures for managing conflicts. These include handling emergencies, managing livestock depredation, and relocating tigers. The initiative also generates employment through direct or indirect means, securing local livelihoods.
