India's Thorium Strategy: Aiming for Energy Independence
The Indian government is implementing a strategic nuclear program to enhance energy capacity by leveraging its vast thorium reserves. The Three-Stage Nuclear Power Programme aims to increase nuclear capacity to 22 GW by 2031-32 and further to 100 GW by 2047, with significant contributions from indigenous thorium-based reactors. Ambitious projects are underway, including a 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, to ensure long-term sustainable energy security.
