India's Unemployment Rate Sees Significant Decline, Government Launches New Initiatives

The Government of India reports a decrease in the national unemployment rate from 6.0% in 2017-18 to 3.2% in 2023-24, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The reduction is consistent across both rural and urban areas, with Maharashtra showing improvement from 4.8% to 3.3% during the same period. The government is prioritizing employment generation and employability through numerous schemes like the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Production Linked Incentive scheme, and various skill development initiatives. Measures are also being taken to improve workforce participation among women and marginalized communities. These efforts are supported by legislative changes to ensure equal opportunities and a supportive work environment for women.
