Inland Waterways Development in India

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has reported that as of July 31, 2025, there are 29 operational National Waterways (NWs) in India. Significant budget allocations have been made for their development, with a total of Rs. 2,521.43 crore allocated over the last three years. Infrastructure improvements include the construction of jetties, terminals, and fairway maintenance to enhance cargo movement and sustainability. Initiatives to promote eco-friendly transport and attract private investment have also been introduced, alongside efforts to facilitate multimodal logistics and improve registration processes for vessels and crew.
