Jal Jeevan Mission Achieves 81% Tap Water Coverage in Rural India

The Government of India's Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched in August 2019, continues to make significant strides towards providing potable tap water to every rural household in India, in partnership with state governments. As of December 2025, over 81% of rural households, covering 15.76 crore homes across approximately 5.82 lakh villages, now have access to tap water. The mission also emphasizes the use of solar energy in water supply systems for isolated and hilly areas. Additionally, a robust system for monitoring, training, and capacity building has been implemented to ensure effective scheme delivery. The initiative has seen innovative steps such as Village Dashboards and eGramswaraj portal integration to enhance operational efficiency, according to a statement by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri V. Somanna.
