Jal Jeevan Mission Achieves 81% Tap Water Coverage in Rural India

The Jal Jeevan Mission, initiated in August 2019 by the Government of India, reports significant progress in providing tap water to rural households across India. As of February 2026, the mission has extended tap water connections to 81% of rural households, benefiting around 15.69 crore homes. The Ministry of Jal Shakti oversees the initiative, alongside government partnerships providing technical and financial support. The mission has been financed through substantial investments each year, with over Rs. 4 lakh crore (combined state and central expenditure) since its launch.
