Jal Jeevan Mission: Expanding Tap Water Access in Rural India
The Government of India, in collaboration with states, is effectively implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to ensure all rural households receive assured potable tap water. Initiated in August 2019, the mission has significantly increased tap water connections from 16.7% to over 81.71% of rural households by March 2026. Efforts also include robust monitoring systems, technological support, and strategic planning to enhance efficiency and sustainability of the water supply.
