Labour Welfare Codes Enhance Conditions for Plantation Workers
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has announced that the conditions of work in tea gardens, previously regulated under the Plantations Labour Act, 1951, are now integrated into the new Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, and the Code on Social Security, 2020, which came into effect on 21st November 2025. These legislative changes require employers to offer comprehensive benefits such as housing, healthcare, and social security to workers. The frameworks also ensure educational support for workers' children, recreational and necessary amenities, thereby improving the welfare of tea plantation workers.
