Leprosy in India: Progress Towards Elimination

India has made significant strides in reducing leprosy prevalence, dropping from 57.2 per 10,000 in 1981 to 0.57 in 2025. The percentage of child cases has also decreased from 9.04% in 2014-15 to 4.68% in 2024-25. As of March 2025, 31 states and 638 districts have achieved a prevalence rate of less than 1 per 10,000, maintaining India's elimination status. The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) has been pivotal in these efforts, focusing on early detection, treatment, and community awareness to combat stigma and ensure a leprosy-free future.
