Mangrove Conservation Efforts in India
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reported an increase in India's mangrove cover to 4,991.68 km² as per the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, marking a rise of 16.68 km² since 2019. The Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) was launched in June 2023 to restore mangrove ecosystems. The Coastal Zone Regulation (CRZ) 2019 classifies mangroves as Ecologically Sensitive Areas, enforcing strict regulations to protect these vital coastal habitats.
