Maritime Trade Handled by Indian Ports
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported a steady increase in cargo handled by Indian ports over the last five years, with a total of 1,594.33 million tonnes in 2024-25. The government is implementing the Maritime India Vision 2030 to enhance the shipbuilding industry and reduce reliance on foreign ships. Key initiatives include the Green Tug Transition Programme, revised shipbuilding policies, and enhanced maritime security measures. The coastal shipping sector has also seen significant growth, with cargo traffic nearly doubling since 2014-15.
