Mega Food Park Scheme: Analysis of Its Impact and Closure

The Mega Food Park Scheme (MFPS), a significant initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY), was implemented by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries from 2008 to March 2021. The scheme aimed to provide a mechanism to link agricultural production to the market by bringing together farmers, processors, and retailers to ensure maximizing value add, minimizing wastage, increasing farmers' income, and creating jobs. The responsibility for these projects lay with Special Purpose Vehicles or Implementing Agencies. As per reports, a total of 41 Mega Food Parks were approved, involving comprehensive private investments and government grants, leading to substantial employment across various regions in India. The scheme has been discontinued as of April 2021, except for attending to already committed liabilities. This information was provided by the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Shri Ravneet Singh, in a recent parliamentary session.
