Ministry of Panchayati Raj Acts Against Proxy Representation in Panchayats
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj in India is intensifying efforts to ensure that Women Elected Representatives (WERs) in Panchayati Raj Institutions exert real and independent authority. Initiatives under the Ravamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan aim to build their governance capacities. A new specialized training module, "Shashkta Panchayat Netri Abhiyan," has trained 64,863 WERs. On direction from the Supreme Court, an Advisory Committee and Task Force were established to address proxy representation issues, with measures including legal protections, mentorship, and public accountability being recommended to empower women leaders effectively.
