Ministry Sanctions New GarimaGrehs for Transgender Welfare

The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment reports 20 operational GarimaGrehs shelters in 16 States/UTs under the SMILE scheme, with three additional shelters sanctioned for Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh in 2025-2026. These shelters focus on the rehabilitation of transgender persons and have supported 2,885 beneficiaries by providing shelter and skill development. A total of 31 proposals for new shelters have been reviewed, leading to the sanction of 6 new GarimaGrehs. The initiative is funded centrally and ensures no complaints regarding safety or harassment have been reported.
