NAMASTE Scheme Aims to Improve Lives of Sanitation Workers

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of India has launched the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme to enhance the safety, dignity, and social security of Sewer and Septic Tank Workers. By the end of 2025, 89,114 workers had been validated under the scheme, with many also covered under health schemes like Ayushman Bharat. The initiative aims to transition sanitation work from hazardous manual cleaning to mechanised methods, although concrete metrics to measure increased productivity are yet to be established.
