Nationwide Smart Prepaid Meter Initiative Underway in India

The Ministry of Power in India is advancing a large-scale initiative to install smart prepaid meters across the country to enhance distribution efficiency and improve consumer services. Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a total of 20.33 crore smart meters have been sanctioned, with 97% of these set to operate in prepaid mode. So far, 4.93 crore meters have been installed, with 1.6 crore already functioning on prepaid settings. The initiative targets government buildings and high-load consumers initially, before expanding to all consumers. This shift is expected to benefit consumers through features like easy recharges and error-free billing while enhancing collection efficiency for utilities.
