The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken cognizance of a reported social boycott against a Scheduled Tribe woman's family in Rayagada, Odisha, following her marriage to a Scheduled Caste man. Villagers demanded a purification ritual, including tonsuring the heads of male family members, for the family to be accepted back into the community. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Odisha for a detailed report within two weeks, highlighting serious human rights concerns.
