NHRC Investigates Custodial Death in Jharkhand

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a reported custodial death in Deoghar district, Jharkhand. A man died on May 21, 2025, after allegedly being tortured during police interrogation related to a cyber-crime. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and DGP of Jharkhand, demanding a detailed report within six weeks, including inquest and post-mortem findings. The Commission is also seeking an explanation for the police's failure to report the death within the mandated 24 hours.
