The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken a proactive step by taking suo motu cognizance of 53 maternal deaths in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh within a year, due to inadequate medical facilities. The NHRC has prompted the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh to produce a detailed report within two weeks. Conditions in the Sidhi district have spotlighted severe deficits in medical infrastructure, especially impacting pregnant women who are compelled to travel long distances for medical care, often under precarious conditions.
