NHRC Takes Action on Gang Rape Incident in Odisha

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a reported gang rape of a 20-year-old female college student at Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha. The incident, involving around 10 men, occurred on June 15, 2025. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Odisha, demanding a detailed report within two weeks regarding the investigation status, the victim's health, and any compensation or counseling provided. The victim is currently receiving medical attention at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, and seven suspects have been detained by the police.
