NHRC Takes Action on Journalist Assault by Police in Punjab

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the assault of a journalist by two police officers in Batala, Punjab. The NHRC has issued a notice to the State DGP for a detailed report on the incident, including the investigation status and the health of the victim, within two weeks. The incident, which occurred on August 1, 2025, was reportedly triggered by the journalist's inquiries regarding the police presence during law and order duties for Independence Day.
