Odisha Faces Persistent Drinking Water Challenges Amid Delayed Projects

Since August 2019, the Indian government's Jal Jeevan Mission has been working with states, including Odisha, to ensure tap water supply to rural households. Despite continual monitoring, Odisha faces persistent drinking water shortages due to groundwater depletion and contamination. Odisha's government has launched various initiatives to address water quality issues and ensure safe water supply, such as installing de-fluoridation and iron removal plants and promoting rainwater harvesting. However, 705 multi-village water supply schemes have been delayed due to issues like land acquisition and contractor performance. The state government has strengthened its efforts through coordination committees and penalties to expedite progress. These details were provided by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti in a recent Rajya Sabha session.
