Over 1.44 Lakh Crores Spent on CSR by Companies in Five Years
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has reported a cumulative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure of over 1,44,159 crore rupees for the last five financial years, as per annual filings in the MCA 21 registry. The CSR expenditures are tracked centrally and published online. The Companies Act, 2013 dictates CSR as a board-driven process with set mechanisms to ensure transparency, including the formation of CSR committees and mandatory actions plans. Companies with significant CSR obligations must also conduct impact assessments of their projects. The reported expenditure aligns with Section 135 of the Act, which mandates companies to spend a minimum of 2% of their average net profits on CSR initiatives.
