Progress in Jal Jeevan Mission: Over 81% Rural Households Now Have Tap Water
Since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in August 2019, the Government of India, in collaboration with states, has made significant progress in providing rural households with tap water connections. As of March 2026, 15.82 Crore rural households, or 81.71% of the total, have access to tap water, a substantial increase from the initial 3.23 Crore households. The initiative focuses on sustainable infrastructure, quality, and community participation. Despite challenges like limited water sources and technical capacity, measures are in place to overcome these, including new roles and enhanced monitoring systems.
