Progress of Jal Jeevan Mission: Access to Tap Water for Rural Households

The Government of India, in partnership with States/UTs, is progressing with the Jal Jeevan Mission aimed at supplying potable tap water to every rural household. As of January 2026, over 15.79 crore rural households have been provided with tap water connections, representing 81.56% coverage. The scheme, initiated in August 2019, has utilized nearly the entire Central budget of Rs. 2.08 lakh Crore for its execution. Measures include adherence to water quality standards, development of testing laboratories, and a comprehensive monitoring system through a dedicated portal.
