Re-assessment of Safety at Indian Nuclear Power Plants

The Department of Atomic Energy has conducted a re-assessment of safety protocols for Indian nuclear power plants following significant global nuclear incidents, including the Fukushima disaster. This assessment, carried out by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), ensures that Indian plants are equipped to handle severe natural events like earthquakes and floods. The recent 8.6 magnitude earthquake affecting Russia and Japan did not impact Indian facilities. Regular safety evaluations and upgrades are part of the ongoing safety measures, particularly for coastal nuclear plants, which are designed to withstand extreme conditions. The Kudankulam site, with six reactors, is highlighted as part of these safety protocols.
