Rehabilitation of Bonded Labourers in India

The Ministry of Labour & Employment has outlined the rehabilitation process for bonded labourers following the abolition of the Bonded Labour System in 1975. The Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976 mandates the identification, release, and rehabilitation of bonded labourers by State/Union Territory authorities. A revamped Central Sector Scheme for Rehabilitation of Bonded Labourers, effective from January 2022, provides financial assistance to rescued individuals, including immediate aid and additional support based on exploitation levels. The scheme also establishes a Bonded Labour Rehabilitation Fund at the district level and emphasizes timely disbursement of aid and prosecution of offenders.
